180-degree rule

In film and digital, the 180° rule is a basic rule that indicates two characters or subjects in the same scene or setup should have the same left/right relationship to each other. Coverage should be shot from one side or the other of this line. When the camera passes over the 180° axis line it is called crossing the line or a reverse angle. The viewer can form a mental map of where the characters or subjects are located in the scene or setup and from the first master shot will be thinking that one character or subject is on the left and the other character or subject is on the right. Crossing this line can give the viewer an uneasy feeling and can confuse them as to where they are.
